Eligibility & Participation

Students participating in extra-curricular activities are evaluated at each progress report and reporting period for each student. Any student receiving a failing mark in any subject will be ineligible for extra-curricular activities for a) two weeks after a progress report or b) four weeks after a report card. If, after this time period all grades are passing, the student will recover his/her eligibility. A description of each extra-curricular activity is listed below.

Student Council
Contact: Mr. Joseph O'brien and Miss Ester Turbay, Teachers
Grade(s): 6, 7 & 8
Day/Time: Weekly, Fridays, 3:00 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Period: Serve 1 school year
Location: Room 2I , Spanish Classroom

Purpose: Student Council is a service organization that plans activities for the student body and works with the PTO, the Athletic Program, faculty, staff and administration to promote school spirit and unity.

Selection: Student representatives are elected during student orientation days at the beginning of the school year. Once elected, continued membership is determined by academic performance and behavior. Every advisor elects two representatives, which gives each grade level four representatives for a total of 12 members. In addition to the 12 representatives, we have an Executive Board that consists of 4 to 7 members.

Executive Board: The Executive Board members are the governing board of the student council and only students in grade 8 are eligible to be elected to this board. These students are elected at the end of the school year for the next school year.

Eligibility Criteria for Nomination:

• No disciplinary contracts
• No academic contracts
• Must have an overall "C" average
• Executive Board only: Must have recommendations from the following: two Teachers, the Assistant Principal and the Principal

Executive Board Requirements: Students elected to Student Council are required to attend all meetings and activities sponsored by Student Council. Only 3 absences are allowed during their year of service. In case of an absence, a letter must be given to the Advisor a day in advance of the meeting or activity.

Athletic Sports

Period: 1 school year
Location: Gymnasium or Designated location

Junior Technology Club

Grade(s): 6, 7, & 8
Day/Time: Fridays at 3:15 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Period: Serve 1 school year
Location: School Computer Lab Room

Eligibility: Students in the above grades may submit an application for membership.  

Purpose: The purpose of the Junior Tech Club is to help develop technology related projects for the school.

Selection: Selection is based upon the following: academic grades, good citizenship, effective communication skills, computer skills, teacher recommendation, and an essay explaining the benefits of technology. Once selected, continued membership is determined by academic performance and behavior.

• Must have an overall "B" average or above
• Must have two teacher recommendations and parental support
• Must write an essay for proposed inclusion

Worship Committee

Grade(s): 6, 7 & 8
Day/ Time: Fridays, 3:00 - 5:00 p.m.
Period: 1 school year
Location: School Building Room 2G

Purpose: Students in grades 6 to 8 are encouraged to join this extracurricular organization. Students are responsible for preparing the prayer table for Morning Prayer each day, assisting at Mass as needed, helping younger students to prepare for service at Mass, and assisting the Campus Minister in helping form the Catholic identity of the campus. 

Eligibility:

• No disciplinary contracts
• No academic contracts
• Must have an overall "C" average
• Must have two teacher recommendations and parental support
• Must write an essay for proposed inclusion
• Is given a trial period to see if they are qualified and do not exhibit excessive tardiness. (Necessary because must set up for morning prayer daily)

Camera Crew

Period: Serve 1 school Year
Location: Library

Purpose: Camera Crew is a service organization that is responsible for training Altar Servers and organizing the weekly mass schedule for serving. They serve all funeral masses and any other mass that requires altar servers.

Responsibility: Camera Crew are responsible for setting up all Audio Visual (AV) equipment for morning assembly on a daily basis, putting up and taking down the flags daily, filming any school activity, setting up the stage and all audio equipment for all presentations. They are also responsible for cleaning and maintaining all TV's VCR's, Overhead's, DVD players, microphones and CD players in the school.

Selection: (5) 8 th grade students are selected and trained one year prior to their service.

• Must have an overall "C" average
• Must have Asst. Principal and Principal's recommendation
• Must be interviewed and if selected given a trial week to see if they are qualified and do not exhibit excessive tardiness. (necessary because must set up for morning prayer daily)

National Junior Honor Society

Location: 2F
Website: National Junior Honor Society

Purpose: This organization is part of the National Honor Society, the oldest and most respected organization for recognizing the academic accomplishments of young scholars in America.

Responsibility: Students will be responsible for organizing several community service projects and creating a student newsletter.

Selection: (6) 7 th and 8 th grade students are selected.

Eligibility:

• By invitation based on academic performance and student character
• No disciplinary contracts
• No academic contracts
• Must have an overall "C" average or above

Altar Servers

Day/Time: As scheduled
Period: Serve during the school year at every Friday Mass service
Location: Church

Purpose: At the meeting students will review the mass schedules and assignments are made. The purpose of Altar Servers is to provide a service to the church and the community by assisting the Priest at every school Mass on Friday.

Responsibility: Altar Serves are responsible for: serving all Friday masses and funeral masses during the week. Altar Servers will receive training.

Oral Spelling Bee

Period: November to May
Location: OLSS school Local competition and if place District and Regional Competition  

Purpose: The purpose of the Oral Spelling Bee is to help students improve their spelling, increase their vocabulary, and develop correct English usage. Students will learn to spell better and have fun doing it. Participating in the Oral Bee Competition will challenge a student to learn. Most importantly, students will learn how to spell almost any word and remember spelling techniques for the rest of their life.

Eligibility:

• Must be in a grade between 4 th to 8 th grades.
• Must be interesting in learning to spell.

Choir

Grades:  2 to 8
Day/Time: Every Tuesday 3:15 - 4:30 p.m.
Month(s):   August thru May
Location: Report to Gym to go to the Music Room

Purpose:  The purpose of choir is to provide students the opportunity to express themselves musically, learn to perform, and to compete. Choir is an expansion to our growing music education department. The activity benefits each student in many different areas. Students learn about breathing and vocal techniques that are necessary for becoming a good singer; learn to use sight-reading and rhythm skills to follow along the music; and learn to work as a team. Choir is beneficial for the student that wishes to continue music education, music performance or learn to compete in high school. Most importantly, the self-confidence and personal satisfaction that the student experiences in learning to sing in front of an audience and together in harmony is extremely rewarding.

Eligibility:

• Must be in 2 nd grade and above.
• Must be able to pay a monthly tuition for costumes for different events or performances.
• Must be able to work well with others in a group setting. It takes a group effort to make a successful choral program.

Equipment or Supplies:  All music sheets and materials are provided during class unless otherwise specified. The student must report to the Gym right after school, to be picked up for class by the music teacher.
